Because It’s Spring…..and Someone Mentioned It

There is something in the air here in Washington, and I don’t mean the smell of coffee wafting on the breeze, although there certainly is that. Let me tell you a little story. A couple of days ago, I went to the store for some groceries. There was something unusual about the flowers sitting there on display. I’m not talking about the saucy bouquets gasping out their last, just waiting until someone nice takes them home before their final shudders.  I’m speaking, how do I put this delicately, of the kind of plants you actually PLANT. Now, they always look good to me, no matter what time of year. I love growing things (and mushrooms, just like a Hobbit). These particular flowers had a personality like the ones in Alice in Wonderland, and they spoke to me. Before very much time had passed, I found myself maneuvering a tiny shopping cart, full of vegetables, fruit, foccacia bread, and one very hands-on toddler, through a doorway back to the check-out stand, with two rather large pots of plantable flowers. Seriously, I think I grew another arm, which is normally a deformity, or at the very least, an inconvenience; but that day it was a SUPER POWER! Strange things happen to me in spring.

Today, when I was on Facebook, I read about someone and their hyacinth-scented room. It reminded me of my junior year in high school, when I was assigned to read and memorize Ten Definitions of Poetry by Carl Sandburg. ( http://www.mrbauld.com/sandburg.html ) If you’ve never read it, it is an excellent read for spring time. 🙂 There is something truly wonderful about spring. For one thing, after all the bad weather and bundling up, it’s such a treat to be able to sit outside in short sleeves and enjoy some sun. I think spring is also wonderful because of life that is popping all around us; flowers blooming, bees buzzing, baby animals, bird songs. The reminder of the possibility of new life is also very spirit-lifting. Nature is, by far, soooo much better at sermons than the most eloquent orator.

So, to sum up for today: saucy bouquets, talking flowers, Carl Sandburg, SPRING!, and New Life!!

P.S. Also coffee
